Triggers, misdiagnoses or causes of Fibromyalgia or M.E./C.F.S.

It is very important to look into possible triggers, misdiagnoses or causes of Fibromyalgia and / or Myalgic Encephalopathy / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

With the help of many other fibromyalgia / C.F.S. patients, we have compiled this list for you to take to your doctor and ask him / her to help you rule out these illnesses, so that you can work out the root cause of your symptoms and treat them more effectively.

Fibromyalgia and C.F.S. are syndromes, which means that they are a name for a set of symptoms with no known cause. That does not mean there is no cause, rather that there is not one specific cause that is the reason behind all cases of fibromyalgia and C.F.S. Whenever a new cause is found, it is given a new name. The patients who have the same set of symptoms but not for the cause that is newly discovered remain in the "syndrome" category, because the cause of their symptoms is not yet known.

A diagnosis of a syndrome should therefore be viewed as a starting point, rather than a final diagnosis. The power of a name may have led you to this site or to read up on treatments for your symptoms. It also makes it easier to explain your symptoms to other people. However the journey is not over until you find the root cause of your symptoms. The following illnesses can cause fibromyalgia and C.F.S. symptoms and it is a good idea to be tested for these illnesses if you are diagnosed with fibromyalgia or C.F.S.

If you have an addition for this list, please contact Diagnose Support so that we can update this list.

A huge proportion of fibromyalgia or C.F.S. patients later find out that the cause was Lyme disease, or mercury poisoning, or mould toxicity, etc... Those who find out what the cause of their fibromyalgia or C.F.S. symptoms is are then able to treat the cause appropriately.

A diagnosis of fibromyalgia or C.F.S. should not be seen as a final diagnosis. You have not found the answer yet. This just gives you a starting point and an easier way of describing your symptoms to people. Continue to try to discover the cause of your symptoms. They are not caused by fibromyalgia or C.F.S.; those are just names that describe them. If you work your way through the list of causes above, hopefully one day you will narrow it down and work out what the cause of your symptoms is.

Keep on searching, there is still hope of finding the cause and cure for your symptoms. Good luck on your quest to find the root cause of your symptoms!

Best wishes,

Prickles!
